What Is Considered Art?

What do you consider to be a form of art? There are many accepted forms of art in the mainstream art community with drawing, painting, photography, and music being the four main categories. That being said, there are a vast array of other forms of art being used as we speak that are not accepted by this same community, including but not limited to 3D modeling, comic books, and video games.

Accepted Forms of Art

The forms of art that are currently accepted by the mainstream art community fall under the two main categories of fine arts and applied arts, which are then sub-categorized into the component art forms of each category.

Fine Arts

The first category is fine arts, it can be defined as “a visual art considered to have been created primarily for aesthetic and intellectual purposes and judged for its beauty and meaningfulness, specifically, painting, sculpture, drawing, watercolor, graphics, and architecture.”  and “Historically, the five main fine arts were painting, sculpture, architecture, music and poetry, with performing arts including theater and dance. Today, the fine arts commonly include additional forms, such as film, photography, conceptual art, and printmaking. However, in some institutes of learning or in museums, fine art and frequently the term fine arts (pl.) as well, are associated exclusively with visual art forms.” Along the same lines as poetry there is writing which includes, verse, and prose. Prose can be further sub-categorized into short stories, novellas, and novels.

Applied Arts

The second category is the applied arts, which “are the application of design and decoration to everyday objects to make them aesthetically pleasing. The term is applied in distinction to the fine arts which aims to produce objects which are beautiful and/or provide intellectual stimulation. In practice, the two often overlap. The fields of industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and the decorative arts are considered applied arts. In a creative and/or abstract context, the fields of architecture and photography are also considered applied arts.”

Next time I will discuss the  unaccepted forms of art.
